Environment

The Group aims to achieve good environmental practice and to minimise adverse environmental impacts. Due to the nature of Mecom’s business, the primary focus is on the reduction of environmental impact in the production and printing of newspapers.  The Group identified the principal areas relevant to our environmental footprint as sustainable sourcing with particular focus on paper, energy consumption and waste management.

Trucost Assurance Statement

Trucost worked with Mecom Group plc to identify its material environmental impacts in the financial year 2010, reporting the data fully in accordance with the GHG Protocol standard. The greenhouse gas data was calculated using the GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting 2010 provided by the UK Government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Trucost collected environmental impact data from Mecom Group’s offices and printing plants covering 80% of the company’s total floor space. The data was collected via Trucost’s secure online data collection portal and standardised to enable meaningful comparison across the Group’s operating sites and to identify any inaccuracies. Trucost did not cross check any data entry but did apply statistical checking techniques to ensure that the data was in line with expectations.
